This book deals with the history of Early Childhood Education, which is examined in the broader context of the History of Pedagogy. It studies anthropological and pedagogical conceptions, child-rearing practices, and institutions of care and education from the beginnings of social organization to 19ο century. It attempts to: a)
To trace the anthropological conceptions that various historical periods and societies had of the child, without limiting itself to early childhood (0-7 years), but treating childhood as a single, broader category, which refers to the period up to the entry into adolescence.
b) To investigate the pedagogical ideas formulated by personalities who have dealt more systematically with the problems of education, as well as their theoretical constructions and proposals or their socio-pedagogical interventions, where and when they exist, focusing mainly on what is relevant to pre-school age in particular and, above all, placing these ideas in the context of the historical and cultural conditions that produced them.
c) To investigate the institutions of education and training, now focusing exclusively on those of early childhood.
