The transition of students to the Gymnasium. Views of Primary and Secondary Education Teachers Volume 8

In recent years, the issue of the movement of students from one educational level to another (transition) and especially in the context of compulsory education has been at the centre of the pedagogical debate, as the findings of relevant research, both Greek and international, reveal the existence of both positive challenges and significant “difficulties” in their subsequent academic path. This book explores the views of primary (teachers) and secondary school teachers regarding this issue of students’ transition to secondary education. First of all, the research reveals that the self-perception of the professional role of secondary school teachers and secondary school teachers varies to a great extent and is related to the difficulties or problems of students’ transition from primary to secondary school. Regarding where potential initiatives for a smooth transition should be targeted, teachers state that the target should be to achieve cooperation between family and secondary school, while teachers target cooperation between primary and secondary school. Finally, with regard to the main thesis of the study, that the institutional ‘discontinuity’ between the two successive compulsory levels of education is a major factor in causing difficulties or even problems of transition, it is found that teachers agree to a greater extent than secondary school teachers.
