The philosophy of biology is one of the most exciting modern branches of philosophy, attracting the attention of scientists in action and beyond. This Handbook, edited by two founding fathers of the discipline, includes the recent views of old and new emerging scholars, who together examine it through the major areas of the subject – the nature of evolutionary theory, systematics, teleology and function, ecology, and the problematic relationship between biology and religion. Up-to-date and thorough in the topics covered, this unique volume will attract the interest not only of professional philosophers, but also of students of the humanities, researchers in the life sciences and, finally, in related fields of research.
David L. Hull was (SB. Died August 11, 2010) Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Northwestern University. The author of numerous books and publications on systematics, evolutionary theory, philosophy of biology, and acclimatized epistemology, he was a member of the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Michael Ruse is Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University. He is also the author of several books related to evolutionary biology including Can a Darwinian Be a Christian? and Darwinism and Its Discontents, both published by Cambridge University Press. As a member of the Royal Canadian Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he appears on television and radio and is a regular contributor to media outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post and Playboy.
