The first edition of this dictionary was published in 1973. The second edition followed in 2002 and then the present one in 2018. The republication of this particular “Etymological Interpretative Dictionary” testifies that interest in Pontic remains alive, as does its relationship with ancient Greek and medieval Greek in general.

From the foreword by the philologist-author and teacher of the Pontian dialect, Ms Archontoula Konstantinidou.
At a time when dialects around the world are disappearing, the third edition of the dictionary offers its own help in reviving interest in the Pontian language. It is a textbook whose use is considered valuable in the learning and cultivation of the Pontic dialect, both for students and for teachers in organized forms of teaching.
The language of a people is the epitome of its identity. It is the words it speaks, its songs, its customs and traditions. “Language is the homeland,” says Nikos Kazantzakis. Every word in this book is a small mosaic in the building of the Pontian language. It is a carrier of memory and consciousness. The loss of a single word is equivalent to the loss of a way of thinking and behaviour, as we think with words and speak with words. If even one is lost, a piece of our history will be lost. For this reason, the author’s recording of the Pontian words rooted in ancient Greek is important for the third and fourth generations, as well as for the next.
