The concept of the self as an organized scheme of self-concepts includes the sum total of one’s thoughts, opinions and feelings about oneself, as well as a multitude of other subjectively evaluated characteristics and feelings. It is a complex conceptual construct which includes cognitive, affective and behavioural aspects.
The authors who contributed to the writing of this book reflected on issues such as body image as part of self-perception, self-esteem in relation to the professional preferences of returning and immigrant students, the agreement or not between teachers and students on aspects of students’ academic self-perception, students’ use of self-hosting strategies and their consequences, perceived emotional intelligence and its functional role in the self-system, self-perceptions of students with learning difficulties, and finally, the development of self-concept in children and adolescents with mild mental retardation.
The content of the book is an abstract, but indicative of the activity that is taking place in Greece regarding the concept of the self and its effects on the functionality of the school and can enable anyone interested -student, psychologist, teacher- to have a fuller picture of the field of the concept of the self, which is one of the most fundamental conceptual constructs of psychology.
