Gabriel Dozic took over the reins of the Serbian Orthodox Church at a particularly turbulent and tragic time. Patriarch Gabriel was a dynamic, charismatic, uncompromising and heroic personality who led the Serbian Orthodox Church through one of the most difficult periods in its long history. He was an advocate of the union of Montenegro with the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, but also a defender of the rights of the Serbian Orthodox Church during the period of the conflict with the State over the signing of Concordat with the Vatican (1935-1937). At the outbreak of World War II he was captured by the Nazi occupation forces, and after a short period of captivity in Belgrade he was transferred together with Bishop Nikolaos Velimirovic of Zitsa to the Dachau concentration camp.
