Greek Schools first operated in Munich in the first two decades of the 19th century. They were founded by Bavarian philhellenes with the aim of preparing Greek children for higher and higher studies in Germany. Some 150 years later, in the early years of Greek immigration to Germany in the 1960s, schools for Greek children and young people from Greece began to operate again in Munich. This time their establishment and operation was based on the efforts of Greek parents who aimed to provide their children with a Greek education and education. Helpers in this struggle were both the Greek Consulate General and Bavarian philhellenes, responsible in the Bavarian Ministry of Education for the education of foreign students.
The present book provides, in the context of a historical retrospective, from the 19th century to the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, multifaceted and interesting information on the foundation and the long-standing operation of Greek schools in Munich and the neighbouring cities. Narratives and photographs of students, teachers and parents bring to life images of school life and evoke feelings of nostalgia.
The Palladion Foundation, which since its establishment has been directly linked to the Greek Schools of Munich, wishes to present the long history of these schools. This publication is a token of recognition and an expression of thanks and gratitude to the Greek Schools for all that they have tirelessly, quietly and effectively offered over five decades to the Greek children of Bavaria.
Basel Triarchy-Herrmann is a PhD student at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. She worked as a teacher and as a professor at the Dillingen Academy for the Training/Metraining of Teachers and Administrators and was a consultant for the Bavarian State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research. For three decades he taught at the University of Munich in the Faculty of Education and Psychology, where he carried out research studies in the field of Bilingualism/Polingualism. She is the author of books and articles in German and Greek on the topics of Bilingualism/Polingualism, School Counselling and Teacher Training. Since 2012 she is President of the Cultural Foundation PALLADION.
