Educational Psychology is an applied science, which deals not only with the description and interpretation of student behaviour, but mainly with the conditions, possibilities and limits of the influence of pedagogical circumstances in order to improve the effectiveness of pedagogical and teaching practice. This is why it is considered as the science of the teacher par excellence, which provides him/her with knowledge, ideas and theories. These resources, however, are not offered for immediate consumption and application, but for reflective use, which sensitises the teacher in such a way that he or she keeps his or her mind and eyes open, so that he or she can accept new knowledge without prejudice and rigidity and learn from his or her own experience. In this way, education does not become a routine of principles and methods, but a creative work through which the teacher is reborn every day.
The author is a retired professor of Pedagogy at the Department of Education and Social Policy of the University of Macedonia.
