The present study investigates the use of the dictionary in the teaching of German as a foreign language by practicing German language teachers who were serving in public and private primary and secondary schools at the time of the study. The starting point for conducting the research was the realization that it would be useful to attempt a systematic investigation and recording of the views, attitudes and practices that practicing teachers have and manifest in the field of teaching the use of the lexicon, which is so far absent from Greek educational research in the field of language teaching.
The paper is mainly structured in two parts, the theoretical and the empirical part, followed by a short third part, the practical part.
The first chapter of the theoretical part presents some basic findings concerning the teaching of German as a foreign language in Greek public education, which emerged from the study of the relevant legislation and the survey of the relevant literature, and presents in outline the prospects for its reinforcement in public schools.
The second part of the paper includes an empirical approach to the subject under discussion, which captures the relationships of German language teachers with the dictionary as a teaching/learning tool and their views and attitudes towards it.
The paper concludes with a short third part, in which some indicative exercises/activities involving the use of a dictionary in German lessons are listed.
